LoboGROW®

 

Overview

The LoboGROW® program aims to enhance the experiences of UNM students who work on campus. Student employment helps students to build valuable skills, and to better understand how skills transfer between different contexts such as the classroom, employment at the university and in their future careers.

 

What is GROW®?

GROW® stands for Guided Reflection on Work. The program originated at the University of Iowa in 2009, and departments at the University of New Mexico first began incorporating GROW® concepts with student employees in 2017. Today, LoboGROW® is widely implemented across the UNM Division of Student Affairs, as well as some other departments around campus.

GROW® uses structured reflection to encourage connections and transfer between workplace learning, classroom learning, and future goals. Student employees and their supervisors have conversations each semester guided by the following questions: 

  1. How is this job fitting in with your academics?
  2. What are you learning here at work that is helping you in school?
  3. What are you learning in class that you can apply here at work?
  4. Can you give me a couple examples of things you are learning here at work that you will use in your future career?

GROW® helps students recognize and articulate what they are learning on the job and prepares them to discuss their transferable skills with future employers. Participating in the program also tends to build stronger relationships between student employees and their supervisors.

The UNM Student Employment Office is an excellent place to learn more about on campus employment, find current openings, and apply for positions.
